New WellStar Paulding Imaging Center Combines Convenience and State-of-the-Art Capabilities
Paulding County and area residents have a new, state-of-the-art Imaging Center, right in their own backyard. Located in the Physicians Center on Bill Carruth Parkway, WellStar Paulding Imaging Center offers convenience – and a full range of top-of-the-line imaging capabilities. No more traveling long distances for imaging procedures – now you can visit your physician and have your imaging procedure in one convenient location.
What’s so important about a center capable of the latest and greatest in imaging? The wonder of high-tech imaging is that it provides a window into the human body – picture-perfect views of organs, bones and tissues – for quick, accurate and non-invasive diagnoses.
WellStar Paulding Imaging Center’s impressive array of imaging capabilities includes:
Open Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI). The Center has the distinction of housing Georgia’s first truly high-field open MRI. The Panorama 1.0T from Philips Medical Systems offers high-quality, cutting edge magnetic resonance technology in orthopedics, spine and breast MRI. Its unique design allows for the largest open system in the industry and exceptionally high image quality and speed. It’s designed to comfortably accommodate all body types, while producing amazing high-resolution images with its unsurpassed magnetic field strength of 1.0T. Coupled with radio frequency waves, the strong magnets quickly produce precise computer images of the body without the use of radiation like X-rays or CT scans. The Open MRI produces the optimal contrast and image quality of a traditional cylindrical MRI scanner while creating a more patient-friendly experience, especially for children, larger patients or those with confinement anxiety.
Bone Densitometry. A Dual Energy X-ray Absorptiometry (DEXA) scan uses low radiation doses to help diagnose osteoporosis and track treatment progress.
Computer Tomography (CT) Scanner. The Center’s multi-slice CT scanner uses X-ray technique and computer technology to show detailed images of the body. The technologically advanced scanner provides more image, or “slices,” at a lower radiation dose level. It can help detect lung disease, cancer, stroke and other conditions.
Digital Mammography. Clearer and faster than film-based mammography, digital mammography provides detailed images of the breast taken by a super-high resolution camera device (think digital camera vs. film camera). Doctors can see the image right away rather than having to run film through a processor. As with a digital camera, doctors can look at the image on a screen and adjust lightness or darkness – and they can zoom in and out to view specific areas of the breast with unprecedented clarity.
“The more we learn, the more we realize how much better digital mammography is,” says Augustus Vaughn, M.D., of Quantum Radiology. Dr. Vaughn, whose specialty is mammography, says digital mammography is much more sensitive and better able to detect abnormalities in dense breasts.
Digital Radiology. State-of-the-art equipment and innovative digital radiology systems are integrated to ensure quality images at minimal X-ray dose levels. Used frequently in orthopedic and pulmonary cases, the ease of equipment positioning provides maximum patient comfort and decreases patient repositioning. Repeat imaging also is minimized with the accuracy of digital imaging.
Fluoroscopy. This X-ray procedure uses contrast material or barium to produce quality images of targeted areas in the body, providing a prompt and accurate diagnosis of a condition or disease. Fluoroscopic procedures typically study upper and lower gastrointestinal tracts, the urinary tract, joints, veins and spine.
Ultrasound. Ultrasound technology relies on high-frequency sound waves to obtain images from inside the body. Radiologists at the Center use ultrasound to capture images of the heart, blood vessels, liver, kidneys, spleen, gallbladder and pancreas.
In addition, nuclear medicine is offered at WellStar Paulding Hospital. Nuclear medicine uses computer technology and small doses of radioisotopes to diagnose and treat disease. The amount of radiation is generally less than or equal to an X-ray. The radioisotopes are targeted toward specific organs, bones or tissues to provide crucial information about a particular type of cancer or disease.
All radiologists at WellStar Paulding Imaging Center and WellStar Paulding Hospital are certified by the American Board of Radiology, and the Center is accredited by the American College of Radiology for mammography and ultrasound services. Further accreditation is in process.
Accreditation demonstrates that the organization meets the standards for delivering high-quality care, according to Brendan Oberg, manager, WellStar Paulding Imaging Center. Consumers should be aware that hospital-based imaging centers adhere to quality standards that hospitals must meet. “Not all freestanding centers are equal,” he stresses.
“WellStar Paulding Imaging Center offers a fast, convenient location for patients’ imaging needs,” says Oberg. “We have state-of-the-art equipment and a warm, welcoming environment. We offer free parking and minimal wait times. This wonderful facility is a great addition to WellStar as we grow to meet the needs of our community.”
